Preferences
A very important point in the category „settings“ is the menu point “preferences. You can reach this setting, by clicking “settings first”.
Immediately a submenu opens. You then have to click the button “preferences” to edit this setting.
Here you have many different options.
Change your password
1.) Enter the current password
Before you are able to change your password, you have to insert the current one. This is a security check so the password can only be changed by the owner.
2.) Enter the new password
Please enter your new password.
3.) Confirm your new password
Please repeat your new password. The repetition makes sure that your chosen password is spelled correctly without any type errors.

You can find the Mahara help option very close to the fist text area.
Password condition summary:
- The password has to consist of at least 6 characters.
- The password has to contain at least one number and at least 2 letters (i.e. head123)
- Please keep in mind that there is a difference between capital letters and small letters (i.e. HeAd123)
- Passwords must be different from username
General settings for your Mahara account
Here you can change general settings of your Mahara account. For example, which Mahara users are able to add you to their contact lists, which of those Mahara users are allowed to send you messages, the usage of the HTML editor, your language settings and the display-configuration of your control buttons.
Friend control
1.) "Nobody may add me as a friend"
No one may add you to their list. If you chose this setting it’s impossible to create your own network.
2.) "New friends require my authorisation"
Your authorisation is required to add you to a list. If somebody wants to add you to his list, you will receive an email with a request to agree.
3.) "New friends are automatically authorised"
Anyone is able to add you to their list without you getting informed.

HTML - Editor
The HTML Editor allows you to create text on some sections of the site in a special formatting. (i.e. bold or italic text). If the editor is turned off you only can enter plain text.
Please keep in mind that some internet browsers can beget problems with HTML text. If errors appear you can avoid these problems by turning of HTML editor.

Messages from other users
Here you can choose whether other Mahara users can pick up contact by messaging you.
1.) "Do not allow anyone to send me messages"
This setting denies others to send you short messages. Do you have this setting mails won’t receive you.
2.) "Allow people on my Friend list to send me messages"
Only a small group of users is permitted to contact you. This setting bewares you of spam.
3.) "Allow anyone to send me messages"
Anyone can contact you. Spam risk is at highest level with this setting.

Language settings
With this option you can choose between the preinstalled language settings. The control panels and help information is automatically translated. Messages sent to you remain in the original language.

Settings Show Controls
You can choose to display a row with buttons in Edit View. These buttons add and remove columns from that view. Even if not enabled, you can change the number of columns for your view on the view layout page.
Save your preferences
1.) "Save preferences"
After applying changes you must save these by clicking the “Save” button.
2.) "Preferences saved"
You will be notified after successfully changing your settings by the green button tagged “preferences saved”
